Description: When constructing the New Saint Gertrude High School, the Chapel received special attention in the design, construction, and furnishing phases. The new Chapel had to capture the reverence and tradition of Saint Gertude’s previous Chapel in Richmond’s Museum District and compliment the architecture and building program in their new location on a bluff overlooking the James River in Goochland, Virginia. The new Chapel brings the altar, the hand-carved wood figures above the altar, and choir formation seating from the original chapel and adds soaring vaulted ceilings, Venetian-plastered ceiling and walls, embossed gold leaf niches, and Cosmatesque marble floors.
